The G is not really a car so much as a statement on wheels — and it is built like nothing else Mercedes makes. Ladder frame, three differential locks, and a shape that has changed remarkably little since 1979.

NINE THINGS EVERY G OWNER EVENTUALLY SEES
Three differential locks
Front, center and rear. When one stops engaging it is usually the vacuum system rather than the differential itself.
Transfer case service
Fluid and actuator work that is easy to defer and expensive to ignore.
A/C blower behind the glovebox
A known failure point, and a fiddly job when it is done properly.
Sunroof drains and seals
Blocked drains put water into the headliner and the fuse box. Cheap to clear, costly to leave.
Door hinges and strikers
Heavy doors on a heavy frame. Sag is normal; the fix is proper adjustment, not a harder slam.
Rear-end whine
Differential wear on higher-mileage cars, usually audible long before it is terminal.
Fuel pump and changeover valve
A W463 pattern fault that shows up as hesitation or a hard start.
Vacuum system
The G runs a great deal on vacuum. Leaks appear as locks that will not engage, or central locking that gives up.
Tire and brake wear
Close to three tons on aggressive tires. Both wear faster than owners expect.
